WHITEHILL Town Council has set in motion plans for the Army's leaving ceremony and may give servicemen and women freedom of the town.

Freedom of the town is an ancient honour, which originated in Rome, granted to people and organisations, usually military. Traditionally, it allows them to march into places with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.

Whitehill town councillor Adam Carew, who proposed the motion, said he was pleased the idea was received well by fellow councillors.
