A COURAGEOUS former firefighter from Fernhurst who suffered a brain haemorrhage just over six months ago has taken part in one of the most challenging obstacle courses around – to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
Arran Acott, from Nappers Wood, raised almost £450 after signing up to tackle the notorious Tough Mudder obstacle course last weekend.
The 10-12 mile course is a challenging course through mud and water obstacles designed to test physical strength, stamina and mental grit.
Arran, 36, and father-of-three young children suffered a brain haemorrhage in October after he was overcome with sudden and horrendous painful headaches.
He was rushed to the Royal Surrey Hospital and transferred to St George’s Hospital, in London, where he made a full recovery.
“I did the Tough Mudder run to raise funds for the amazing charity Headway, who support people who have had a brain injury,” said Arran.
“Headway support them with all aspects of their rehabilitation. I have been so lucky that I’ve had no long term damage but I wanted to raise some much needed money for the people still needing support.”
Arran whose children are Abbie, 14, Joshua, 12, and nine-year-old Isobel, was forced to give up his job with Surrey Fire and Rescue after seven years service because of the illness.
He took on the challenge with his friend Matt Drummer with the pair completing the course in three-and-a-half hours.
“They went through ice cold water, an assault course as well as carrying each other on their backs,” his proud wife Becky told The Herald.
“He seemed to enjoy it and wants to do it again and rope me in next time,” said a sceptical Becky.
“I think Arran needed a bit of a challenge after leaving the fire brigade and missed the camaraderie and training so decided to raise money for Headway,” she continued.
Training which involved running more than three miles, three times a week,
Becky added: “We were really proud that he raised the money for such a good cause – it was amazing.”
