ROAD signs melted, 400 tonnes of straw was destroyed and commuter traffic came to a standstill last week as Petersfield firefighters tackled a massive blaze started by arsonists. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information after West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to the fire on the B2146 between Harting and Petersfield. Three fire engines were initially sent to the incident at 6-17 am on Thursday, September 22. But on their arrival, a further appliance and a water carrier from Littlehampton were requested for greater resources. The road was closed to rush hour traffic as a precautionary measure due to the amount of heat radiating from the blaze. A spokesman for the service said: "A mechanical digger was used to separate the stack whilst firefighters tackled the fire using two water jets, with supplies being maintained by a water shuttle. "Two appliances from Midhurst and two appliances from Petersfield attended the scene. "Fire crews have remained on the scene throughout the day damping down and turning over." Sussex Police are asking anyone with any information to contact them on 0845 607 0999, alternatively call Crimestoppers confidentially on 0800 555 111.
