A NEW exhibition opened at Gilbert White’s House Museum in Selborne - the work of a collective of four female artists, whose styles and methods all vary in creating pieces of contemporary art.

Aptly entitled ‘Wild’, for this exhibition the artist’s have created new artwork responding to the words of Gilbert White and the scenic landscape of Selborne, where the naturalist lived.

The pieces were unveiled for a private audience on September 7, along with the release of a new Gilbert White Gin inspired by the exhibition.

The artists are Fiona Pierce, Penny Fleet, Karen Burling and Lisa Bartlett. Each artist has produced a wide range of pieces that will be on display in the museum’s newly-renovated Discovery Room and Long Corridor for three months and will be free to view, alongside normal admission to the house and gardens.

Artist Lisa said: “As artists, we are all inspired by the natural world. We were delighted to be offered the opportunity to put together an exhibition at the home of one of the worlds most loved naturalists.

“Since visiting Selborne in the early spring we have been working hard to put together a collection of paintings to complement this extraordinary place. We hope that visitors will come and see our colourful contemporary interpretation, celebrating Gilbert White’s home and Selborne.”

The art work is available to buy, along with cards and prints of some of the designs.

The Gilbert White Wild Gin was inspired by the wild botanicals growing in Gilbert White’s garden and features dandelion, clover, nettle and thyme and is on sale in the museum shop.

The group will be holding events inspired by their work during the autumn, including a family collage event on October 22.
