FARNHAM ASSIST celebrated the 25th International Day of the Older Person earlier this month with their annual Songs of Praise service.
It was a glorious Indian summer’s afternoon as around 75 people filled the United Reformed Church in South Street, to mark the special day. Farnham Town Mayor Pat Frost, whose charity for the year is Farnham ASSIST, was in attendance.
A number of older people from the community were asked beforehand to choose their favourite hymn. During the service they were interviewed by June Trantom, Farnham ASSIST manager, who asked why their choice was so important to them.
The first person to be interviewed was Ken Wickenden, Farnham ASSIST treasurer. Ken shared how his choice, Just as I am really summarised his Christian walk with God over the years.
The hymn God is Working His Purpose Out was chosen by Dr Stella Walters, who has been a praise and worship volunteer with ASSIST since it started some 13 years ago. Ione Carver, also an original praise and worship volunteer, chose Eternal Father Strong to Save.
Ione shared how her family had been in the navy in both world wars and that this hymn was very significant to her because of this connection.
Finally, David Ellenden, another praise and worship volunteer, shared how Be Still, My Soul had brought him comfort over the years through some difficult situations.
Dr Terry Boyle, a deacon at Farnham Baptist Church and pastor of Insight for Living, gave a short, uplifting talk on Joshua Chapter 14 verses 6-12, which were read by Mrs Frost.
The afternoon was rounded off with an afternoon tea prepared by Farnham ASSIST volunteers. The team is very grateful to all those who took part in the afternoon and helped to make it such an enjoyable time for everyone.
Farnham ASSIST is a volunteer-based charity working with older people in Farnham.
