HASLEMERE athlete Andy Kelsey struck gold for Team UK at the Paralympics-style Invictus Games in Orlando, USA, for injured members of the armed forces.
While serving with an RAF aircrew unit, in Spain, in 2004, he suffered sustained damage to his spinal cord resulting in paralysis of all four limbs and a minor brain injury.
Undeterred, he used cycling as part of his rehabilitation and went on to become a member of the Great Britain cycling team.
Now, aged 37, Andy powered to victory in the Invictus road bike time trial.
He is pictured at the finish with his daughter Elsa and fellow medal winners USA team captain Will Reynolds (left) and Edwin Wolf of the Netherlands.
Andy told The Herald.: “The many hours spent training and sacrifices I have made make winning gold particularly sweet.
“Having my family their to share the moment made it even more special. My family and I have had the most fantastic time in Orlando.
“It was truly a once in a life time experience and we all have wonderful memories from the trip. Only in Disney can you be at a party with both George Bush and Mickey Mouse.
“We have also been overwhelmed by the support we have received on our return.
“I haven’t yet decide what my next challenge will be and I’m currently enjoying a well deserved rest.”
