A FULLY-booked driving event in Petersfield gave youngsters the chance to get behind the wheel and test their driving skills.
The latest Autotest event, organised regularly by East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) and its award-winning partner Southsea Motor Club, took place on April 29 and gave anyone over the age of 14 the chance to drive a car in a safe but competitive environment.
The youngsters were able to test their precision driving skills around an intricate course under the supervision of experienced competitors from the motor club.
They didn’t need a provisional licence, all they needed to know was how to steer and operate the pedals. An instructor was in the car with them at all times.
April’s event was the eighth time Autotest has taken place at EHDC’s offices at Penns Place and the event continues to grow and become increasingly popular.
Southsea Motor Club was named the JLT MSA Club of the Year after using events such as Autotest to introduce motorsport to new people and dramatically increase its membership. It was chosen ahead of more than 700 other clubs across the country and its work on Autotest with EHDC was highlighted as a big part of that success.
EHDC deputy leader Julie Butler said: “The Autotest events that we run here at Penns Place are always popular. They are extremely well-run and there is something really exciting to young people about getting behind the wheel and driving a car.
“Seeing the amount of excitement and enjoyment at the event really makes it worthwhile and we are delighted that we can give the young people of the district this opportunity in a safe environment.”
