Around 30 students and their parents attended the awards ceremony. John Ward, the Mayor of Farnham, presented students with their certificates and medals for their achievement of reaching the Kumon International Standard, and in some cases, surpassing it, meaning they are studying advanced work in comparison to their peers world-wide.
The ceremony also encouraged and motivated students who have yet to reach ASHR status.
Uma Lonergan, a year three student who was receiving certificates for both maths and English, gave a speech about how Kumon has helped her achieve well at school.
Sujal Gurung, a Farnham Heath End School pupil, who was being recognised for reaching Level G in both Kumon maths and English programmes while still in year six, told of how he had studied topics such as algebra, summarisation and critique, and had in turn impressed his teachers with his accurate methods of work.
A special award was made to Shreya Morgan, four, who received the Early Learner Achievement Award for making good progress with counting and word recognition.
Siblings Merlin and Aidan Koottummel received ASHR 1 certificates in both maths and English.
And siblings Ann Rose Albin Kottackal also received ASHR 1 certificates, with Albin being recognised for both subjects and Ann Rose being recognised for achievements in English. All of these students attend St Joseph’s Primary School.
Daily study of the Kumon programmes requires dedication and perseverance from both the student and their parents.
This ceremony was a chance to not only reward and celebrate the students’ achievements but to also thank parents for their on going commitment to their child’s Kumon studies.
Two parents, Mr Gurung – father of Sujal Gurung, and Mrs Wattenbach, mother of Tom Wattenbach, were given recognition for the way they have supported their child progress using the Kumon method.
Instructor at the study centre, Disha Lonergan, said: “The Farnham Study Centre has now been open for two years and we have supported many students in achieving their goal of improving their maths, English and study skills.
“The awards ceremony was great occasion where we were able to reward all the hard work that students have put in to their Kumon Study.
“I am very proud of all of our students and thank the parents for their continued support, as well as our team of assistants at the Kumon Farnham Study Centre.”
Established for more than 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their independent study skills and confidently tackle advanced work beyond the international standard for their age.
Students initially start at a comfortable level with a focus on building a strong foundation in the way they study, they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm before progressing to more advanced work.
