HASLEMERE Town Council's planning and highways committee has given its backing to a trial 20mph speed-restriction zone in the town.

But before it goes ahead, the pilot scheme in Haslemere will have to win approval from Surrey County Council.

Campaigner Victoria Leake, who has been lobbying the county for a 20mph zone through a public petition, said after last Thursday's town meeting: "The next step will be to convince the county council.

"I have a feeling the hard work is just beginning."
