IT was supposed to be their annual spring fair, but Friends of Four Marks Parent Teacher Association (PTA) found they were battling winter conditions when they experienced rain, thunder, lightning and hail as they set up the stalls and games.

However, things had settled down to steady rain by the time the fair opened on May 19 and the stalls – quite a few had been brought into the school hall – were open for business. There was a big variety to choose from and many of the pupils helped run them.

Really welcome during the chilly afternoon were the hot teas, coffee and barbecue, but there weren’t quite so many takers for the ice lollies!

However, decked out in wellies and raincoats quite a few brave souls queued to enjoy the highlight of the fair – zorbing, where people climb into a huge ball and are rolled down a hill.

It was like a small river but a representative from PR Leisure kept the hill route clear of water so everyone had a smooth ride to the bottom.

Alison Davies, a member of the PTA committee, which is headed by Ellen Barnes and Fay Ham, said: “It was the worst weather we have had for our fair. The only thing we didn’t get was snow, so we are grateful to all those who came and supported us.

“Also, a huge thank you to everyone who gave their time and especially Four Marks and Medstead Rotary, Streetwatch, Mark Hughes and Triple fff brewery, Read’s butchers, and Arrows Off Licence.”

Alison added: “The amount we raised is still to be confirmed and funds raised will go toward the new interactive whiteboards going into every classroom which the parent teacher association has agreed to help part-fund.

“Our next big community event is the fireworks and bonfire night which will be on Friday, November 3.”
