BAILIFFS have evicted an illegal traveller encampment from the Farnham Leisure Centre car park.

Waverley Borough Council received the go ahead to evict around 14 caravans from the Dogflud Way car park at Staines Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Wednesday, April 12).

Enforcement action was taken immediately to evict the travellers using professional bailiffs.

Paul Wenham, executive director at Waverley Borough Council, said: “The council was made aware of the camp on Thursday, April 6, and officers visited the camp to undertake the appropriate welfare checks.

“The following day the council served a Section 77 notice, directing those on site to leave by Saturday, April 8. Legal action was initiated as the travellers refused to move on.

“It is costly for the council to do this but we have to work within the confines of the law.”

The council, which previously delivered portable toilets and bins to the site, has since cleaned the site of items left behind.
