Concerned residents are set to launch their own safety campaign in a bit to reduce accidents at a notorious junction in Farnham.
Banners inspired by the 1980s Green Cross Code could soon appear on the railings at Hickley’s Corner if proposals by Alexia and Steve Warner are followed through.
The pair and others are growing increasingly concerned about pedestrian safety at the junction following three serious accidents since the beginning of 2026.
They are even prepared to supply and fund the barriers with their own money as the campaigners feel they “somehow need to make a difference.”
“My friend was actually a witness and became really traumatised by it,” said Alexia to town councillors last Thursday, adding: “This is something that’s very personal to us and we don’t want to see anyone else hurt.
“Our focus would be to try and engage with pedestrians so they can take safe choices.”
The town council has offered £250 in support of the “excellent idea” while the campaign was also mentioned the following morning during the Farnham Board meeting.
Duncan Knox, road safety expert at Surrey County Council, said the incidents had no pattern as they had taken place at different places, with police not raising any concerns.
But he added SCC were looking into “anything and everything” to improve safety at the junction in the short term, with red light and speed surveys being carried out both approaches on the A31 Farnham bypass.
The town council has been asked to remove some flower troughs to improve sightlines but the ultimate goal is a “redesign” of the whole junction with SCC leader Tim Oliver, and Greg Stafford MP pushing for funding.
Mr Stafford said: “The number of tragic incidents we’ve had at Hickley’s Corner shows the emphasis and need that something needs to happen urgently at that junction.”
