A WOMAN with cerebral palsy was “left in tears” after she was refused entry to the Slug & Lettuce bar in Farnham on Saturday, June 24.

According to the woman’s family, bar staff turned her away “because she can’t walk properly” on the evening of Farnham Carnival - despite being told about the woman’s disability.

The Cambridge Place bar told The Herald numerous people were turned away on th day “for various reasons”, and denied the woman was refused entry because of her disability.

But a Facebook post by the woman’s sister criticising the Slug has went ‘viral’, attracting more than 4,600 shares, over 700 ‘likes and emotions’ and in excess of 350 comments.

The post said: “Slug & Lettuce Farnham I hope you are proud of yourselves, not letting my sister in because she can’t walk properly.

“She has cerebral palsy and this was explained to you by me. You were happy to let me in in scruffy jeans and t-shirt but not her which you later excused as her ’appearance’ perhaps you haven’t heard of equal rights.

“I’ve brought my sister home in tears, you are disgusting.”

The Slug & Lettuce, of which there are more than 70 bars across the country, has since contacted the woman’s family to apologise and says an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesman for the chain said: “Saturday evening was carnival and there were a number of people excluded from the venue for various reasons in accordance with licensing and safety policies.

“We are actively investigating this matter and liaising with the family to better understand the situation and find a suitable resolution.

“Whatever the outcome we of course apologise for any upset caused as that was certainly not the intention.

“We very much value our customers and want to ensure they have a great experience which was clearly not the case in this instance.”

Cerebral palsy is the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and co-ordination, caused by a problem with the brain that occurs before, during or soon after birth.
