BARNET 3, ALDERSHOT TOWN 0
ALDERSHOT Town looked anything but play-off contenders on Saturday as they crashed to defeat against a Barnet side who had gone 14 games without a win.
After a goalless first half at Underhill, the Bees hit three goals without reply, making it a forgettable debut for Stephen Henderson – on loan from Bristol City – who had been given the keeper's jersey ahead of ever-present Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz.
Manager Kevin Dillon played Marvin Morgan alongside John Grant up front, but Aldershot missed the pacy wide play of Marlon Jackson and midfield drive of Scott Donnelly – both injured.
Barnet, hammered 4-0 at the EBB Stadium over Christmas, were up for this one and impressed from the start, despite playing up the slope.
Albert Adomah was a real handful on the right and gave Andy Sandell a torrid afternoon. But Barnett struggled to create anything clearcut and, in fact, the visitors had the best openings before half-time.
Louie Soares shot well wide after intercepting a poor clearance and Morgan headed over the bar when Craig Chalmers' cross found him in a great position.
Early in the second half, Morgan was unlucky not to score after a trademark barnstorming run. The lanky striker powered down the right and then shouldered his way along the byeline before being denied by the alert Jake Cole who saved well on his near post.
The game came to life then, but it was Barnet who found the back of the net.
Ten minutes into the second half, the tricky Adomah got past Sandell on the outside and his inviting cross ws headed home by 35-year-old midfielder Micah Hyde.
Henderson saved in quick succession from Jake Hyde and Adomah as Barnett tried to follow up their advantage.
But Barnet's second goal on 63 minutes was a gift. Soares was caught in possession near his own penalty area and the ball fell perfectly for John O'Flynn who poked it past the helpless Henderson.
Aldershot sent on Danny Hylton and Kirk Hudson, and the latter missed a chance to put Barnet under pressure when he sliced his shot wide after Oliver Bozanic had headed back Ben Herd's cross.
Ian Hendon's side wrapped up the points with five minutes to go. New signing David Livermore provided the cross and O'Flynn's downward header made it 3-0, completing Barnet's first win since late October.
"They have taken their chances and we didn't take ours," said Kevin Dillon afterwards. "Three-nil looks a poor result, but it was never a 3-0 game.
"It was just disappointing and we've got to put it right for the next game."
