AN investigation into the question of installing a crash barrier in the wake of a fatal accident on Farnham's A31 bypass is now being pursued by Surrey County Council.

Members of the council's local committee for transport discussed the issue at a meeting this week, and the case of teenage road crash victim Laura Bowden was highlighted.

Laura died in October 2001 along with the driver of another vehicle, Dr William Halstead, when their cars were struck by a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

It had veered out of control across the unprotected central reservation while trying to avoid contact with a car on its own side of the road near the Shepherd and Flock roundabout.

A spokesman for the county council said the council was taking very seriously the comments which were made by the judge in the case against the lorry driver, who was jailed for six months last month after admitting two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

The judge stated that barriers to the central reservation could have prevented Laura's death.

She said the council would now be carrying out an investigation into erecting crash barriers, which would require significant financial outlay.

She added there were a number of similar roads within the county where such measures are also not in place.

This was due to the fact that barriers had not been deemed a legal requirement when the roads were originally built.
