POLICE are treating a fire which broke out in the early hours of Monday morning on a building site at Bartholomews Close as suspicious.

The fire, which started in the garages of two almost-completed homes was spotted by a neighbour at just after 6 am.

Firefighters from Haslemere fought the blaze which caused extensive damage to two linked garages and the bedrooms above.

The fire at the two homes, which have been the subject of much controversy since planning permission was granted last year, was spotted by Ann Spilberg from Weycombe Road.

She saw a glow coming from inside the houses. "I called my husband to make sure I wasn't dreaming and then phoned 999," said Mrs Spilberg.

Dc Paddy Mayers who is dealing with incident said thefire which started at the back of the garage was of "doubtful origin".

He appealed for any witnesses or anybody who had seen anything suspicious over the past few days to contact him on 012523 716262.
