Farnham Town won the bottom-of-the-table clash at Cranleigh on Tuesday night.

Cranleigh have provided Farnham with their only two wins of the season and the Waverley rivals again swap places at the bottom of the Combined Counties League.

Manager Andy Nunn changed tactics for a match that was all about local pride and was delighted with his side's gritty performance.

"We went out determined not to concede goals and we did it very well. To score goals, you first have to stop giving them away."

With that in mind, Nunn switched to a five-man defence and brough in new coach Tim Smith to play sweeper.

Farnham played with Joe Banks as a lone attacker and the plan was to use him as a target man and push up quickly from midfield in support.

It worked. Farnham had given away two bad goals against Walton Casuals on Saturday, eventually losing 2-0, but they looked much tighter at Cranleigh.

The experienced Smith proved a good communicator and Farnham played with a much better understanding and fluency.

True, the winner came from an own goal, but Farnham were perhaps owed a little luck.

Banks had already gone close, shooting just wide from a good cross by Jason Frommholz.

Then, on 20 minutes, a home defender attempted a back pass without realising his 'keeper was right behind him and the ball rolled into the net for a classic own goal.

The second half was a test of Town's character. Cranleigh, who had beaten Chipstead in mid-week, became more physical, yet it was Farnham who suffered at the hands of the referee who booked four visiting players and sent off Gary Slessor.

Town were pushed back, but defended well and, whenever possible, knocked the ball upfield for Banks to hold up and frustrate the home side.

Matt Collins pulled off a couple of excellent saves and Leon Ellen made a vital block tackle when Cranleigh looked certain to score.

Farnham: Collins, Hunter, Slessor, Wheeler, Neale, Smith, Frommholz, Ellen, Wright (Hooper), Middleton, Banks. Subs (not used) Cunningham, Francis.
