THE BBC has been condemned for beginning the recording of a new series of motor show Top Gear without the relevant planning permission. The studios are situated at Dunsfold Park, near Cranleigh. In kicking off its new series without planning permission, the BBC has taken a huge risk, after it failed to get similar permission in Oxfordshire. Top Gear's bid to build a new studio and track at Enstone, close to presenter Jeremy Clarkson's home, was fiercely opposed by local residents. Dunsfold resident Sasha Sebastian said: "I am at a loss to see why the BBC and Dunsfold Park feel they can simply ignore planning law. "If it was enough to stop them at Enstone, why don't they pay attention here?" Dunsfold Park is already subject to a noise abatement notice issued by Waverley Borough Council, and now a group of local residents are rumoured to be looking into taking private action. South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt said this week that he was deeply concerned over the rumours that the BBC had flouted planning laws by starting the filming. In a statement, he said: "Intolerable disruption continues, and only this Saturday local residents were subjected to unbearable disturbance, screeching tyres and screaming engines from more unauthorised motorsports. "For residents the situation seems to highlight the nationwide problem of property developers and site owners not adhering to planning law. "Many feel that councils need to be armed with stronger enforcement powers to put an immediate halt to activity which does not have permission." Planning permission for the last series of Top Gear at Dunsfold Park expired in April. Mr Hunt added: "While Top Gear is an immensely popular programme, their production team needs to respect the wishes of local residents. "Many people are very concerned about activities at the aerodrome which cause huge disturbance to people living nearby, and the company that owns it is already subject to a noise abatement order. It would be highly regrettable if Top Gear has added salt to the wound by starting filming without permission."
