JUNIOR road safety officers from year five at Camelsdale Primary School led an assembly with the help of Mr Len Howard, the school’s “Lollipop man”.

The children reminded their peers 20mph is plenty around the school, and that everyone should wear a helmet when cycling

They also told the other children need to “Be bright…be Seen” during the short daylight hours in the winter months.

They launched a competition to remind everyone not to use their mobile phones when crossing roads or driving.

Headteacher Sarah Palmer said: “The school is working closely with the parish council and West Sussex County Council (WSCC) to try to get drivers to be more considerate when driving through Camelsdale village and near to the school.

“It is unbelieveable to think we have had several incidents of drivers being on their phones as well as drivers actually swerving round Mr Howard and not stopping for the children. No road trip is worth an accident.”

The school has just been awarded a “Modeshift” School Travel Plan award by WSCC for its commitment to road safety.
