IN just six months villagers have not only raised thousands of pounds for a new bell to commemorate the First World War heroes of Rogate, they are now looking forward to seeing and hearing the results of their poignant fundraising efforts ring out from the parish church of St Bartholomew. It was a modest "pudding club" that set the ball rolling in March, raising more than £500, followed by a jumble sale, car washes, sponsored bike ride and many other events which in all has raised a magnificent £8,000. With just £2,000 left to raise to fit the two hundredweight masterpiece, the new St Michael's bell has arrived safely from where it was cast in Loughborough, Leicestershire, complete with the names and ranks of those in Rogate who lost their lives. It is ready to be filled with ale on Saturday when the celebrations will begin in earnest at The White Horse pub opposite the church. It will be in its final resting place in the bell tower of St Bartholomew's in time for Armistice Day on November 11, when the sound of the Sanctus bell will add to the seven existing bells.
