A LAST-minute bid to save an historic footbridge on a former railway in Liss appears to have come off the rails.

Liss Parish Council is steaming ahead with plans to replace the 'white bridge' off Riverside Railway Walk.

The narrow bridge, which connects the trail with West Liss, was built to allow soldiers and civilians to reach the Longmoor Military Railway.

But health and safety legislation has no place for sentiment, so the bridge is being rebuilt to meet modern requirements.
