FARNHAM Maltings’ longest running craft event returns this month, with more makers showcasing their work than ever before.

The annual, two-day Festival of Crafts, which runs from October 27-28, confirms that the appetite for handmade, contemporary craft continues to grow.

Now in its 22nd year, the festival has long been established as one of Britain’s leading independent craft events and will welcome more than 2,000 craft and making enthusiasts through the doors over the weekend.

Throughout the historic Maltings buildings, a curated range of more than 80 emerging talents and established makers from Surrey, Hampshire and across the UK make up the diverse marketplace. Specialising in media such as textiles, glass, leather, ceramics and jewellery, sellers offer unique, handcrafted work to suit varying tastes and budgets.

An event spokesman said that the complementary programme of innovative installations, bookable workshops, demonstrations and participatory activities "provides an accessible experience both for the curious and the knowledgeable, in a relaxed environment for the whole family to enjoy".

The programme includes:

* Installations by UCA master graduates and artists Oliver Olsen and Manuela Warren.

* Participation activities such as the Maltings’ Craft Trail (especially for the young crafters) that take you across the building and behind the scenes of the studios.

* Surrey Guild of Craftsmen demonstrating the broad range of expertise within their membership.

The festival of crafts is the final event of Farnham craft town month, a celebration of contemporary craft throughout October.

In its fourth year, the October initiative aims to recognise Farnham’s rich heritage in craft and the contemporary makers based in the town.

Visitors are invited to listen, watch and get creative (with activities suitable for everyone) as Farnham Town Council and many local creative organisations, including Farnham Maltings, University for the Creative Arts and the Museum of Farnham, come together to host this celebration of craft.

The festival is open from 10am-5pm each day. Tickets cost £3, including a festival catalogue, with free entry for under-15s.
