AS short-term cuts are announced in the way Petersfield's maternity unit manages the latest baby boom in the area, the head of Portsmouth's midwifery service has declared that The Grange is still "well and truly open" for business.

The cutback is the latest twist in the chequered history of The Grange, which attracts pregnant women from the town and its surrounding areas including Liss, Liphook, Grayshott, Hindhead and Haslemere.
