OPPOSITION to the proposed cuts at the Chase Hospital has continued to grow, with the Bishop of Guildford the latest to voice his opinion.

The Rt Rev John Gladwin has written to the chief executive of the North and Mid Hampshire Health Authority, Gareth Cruddace, opposing the plans to close all the beds at the community hospital as part of a package of cost cutting measures.

Bishop John wrote: "This proposal has caused considerable disquiet in the local community. St Marks Church, which is an ecumenical church, is in the Diocese of Guildford. They have kept me informed of their concerns.

"As you will be aware this is a needy community. It is a pocket of social need in a generally prosperous county. Its voice could easily be missed.

"In a community like Bordon we need assurance that the government's stated aim of improving health care provision for all, including the elderly and those who are confused, remains a top priority in this case.

"It seems to many in Bordon that the proposals are primarily a cost saving exercise rather than a strategic move to improve facilities for Bordon people.

"I hope the authorities will think again."

Church leaders have already become involved with the campaign, helping to distribute thousands of leaflets to local residents urging them to reject the plans.

They hope many residents will attend a second public meeting on January 17 at St Marks Shared Church, Pinehill Road, starting at 7 pm, and voice their concerns.
