A TEAM of 15 from Haslemere, including four-year-old Freddie Constable who has primary bilateral congenital glaucoma, is taking part in the annual 5K Race for the Kids in aid of Great Ormond Street children’s hospital (GOSH).

Freddie’s mum Lucy Constable and friends are doing the race blindfolded.

Lucy said: “This is because firstly we understand that 5K doesn’t seem especially amazing to a lot of people but, secondly, mostly to represent the fact that without GOSH little Freddie would most certainly be blind.”

Team Freddie includes Fi Blades, who is a duty manager at The White Horse pub and restaurant, in Haslemere.

The pub is holding a night of fundraising with a quiz and raffle at 8pm, on Sunday, May 8, and prizes include: £20 White Horse voucher, craft beers, ASK meal voucher, £10 Haslemere book shop gift card, a beauty voucher for a head, neck and shoulder massage at the Hair Chair, Haslemere, and more.

Freddie was diagnosed at three months old and has been under the care of GOSH ever since.

He has had eight eye operations and has up to 12 eye drops a day.

As a result of some of his medication Freddie has developed cataracts and also adrenal suppression.

Lucy added: “The White Horse fundraising evening will be a lovely event to celebrate a special cause. Everyone in Haslemere has been very generous with prizes so we hope to have a good turn out and hopefully raise lots of money and awareness!”

Team Freddie will take part in the race the following Sunday, in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Team members are: Fi, Freddie, Lucy, Carmen Constable, Charlotte Constable, Victoria Constable, Sofie Brewis, Alex Bullivant, Harry Barnbrook, Emma Fortescue Hitchins, Sophie Hitchins, James Jaulim, Isabelle Manley-Cooper, Natasha North and Daniel Steene.

Lucy started fundraising originally for the hospital by setting up a Just Giving page so friends and family could donate instead of buying birthday presents.

She then became involved in a number of campaigns to raise funds for the hospital, including the RBC Race For The Kids 5K last year.

Freddie was also featured in a hospital promotion urging people to hold bake sales for the “Bake it Better” campaign.

The Herald featured a story about Freddie and the team’s past efforts when they ran the Brighton Half Marathon, in February.
