SURREY Police have arrested 18 drivers suspected of being under the influence of drink or drugs during the second week of its Christmas crackdown.
The force’s 2016 campaign is promoting the message ‘Go cold turkey’ and have no drink or drugs at all, and officers from Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Units have been carrying out dedicated patrols to put the brakes on those who drive under the influence.
Inspector Alan Nicholls said: “As we are finding, just like any time throughout the year, there are always some people who just don’t heed advice and choose not to make sensible decisions about getting behind the wheel.
“These drivers have luckily been prevented from causing death or serious injury to themselves or to other road users but they should never have got in the car in the first place.
“There is no excuse for driving when you’ve had a drink or taken illegal drugs – and yes this includes some prescription drugs too; both substances cam seriously impair your ability to drive.”
Inspector Nicholls added all those arrested will be going to court to face justice and take responsibility for their actions.
He continued: “I would urge anyone and everyone who is out and about on the roads over the festive period to be aware of the consequences they could face if they are found guilty of drink or drug driving.
“A court conviction can affect your career, family life and ultimately your choices in life – take the sensible option and plan ahead.”
Information about a suspected drink or drug driver can be passed to the police via text on 65999 or by dialling 999 if the circumstances involve a driver causing immediate danger to others by driving when intoxicated.
Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
All information given will be passed on to the roads policing officers and acted upon. Officers will also be tweeting about what incidents they deal with as and when they occur.
