AS their oldest member, Alton Library Club decided to give centenarian Bob Weighton, who is a 107, an early birthday treat with a party and a special cake at their March meeting.

The celebration, almost four weeks before Bob’s 108th birthday, was attended by Helen Jesty, Anna Chaplin for the Elderly, and 30 guests.

Mr Weighton has been a long-standing member of the library club since it was formed five years ago and as a thank you he read a passage from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre.

Fellow club member Peta Sutherland said: “I think he enjoyed it and it was a very happy occasion.

“I want to thank Alton library staff for volunteering to help with the party on a Wednesday when they are closed and it is their day off.”

She added: “We gave Bob, who lives in Alton, an early celebration as his actual birthday is on March 29.”
