BOHUNT School held its annual Heroes Day, which was attended my members of the army, fire services, Canine Partners and the NHS inclusion recovery team.
The event, a favourite with students, also consisted of all year groups enjoying personal, social, health and economic lessons focusing on emotional health and wellbeing, relationships and friendships, drugs and alcohol.
Students benefited from visiting speakers, learned about the effects of smoking with Hampshire NHS Stop Smoking Service and about the effect of illegal drugs with a performance called ‘High’ from Peer Productions.
In addition they were able to join in with a poetry slam on body image run by London spoken word artist, Lionheart! and had a chance to meet a Syrian refugee from Breaking Barriers, as well as hear about his gruelling journey from Syria to the UK.
Canine Partners’ Eileen Reynolds and her working dog Icarus did a demonstration while Staff Sergeant JE Old gave an army presentation.
Camouflage and concealment was displayed by the Duke of Connaught’s Squadron and the Adjutant General’s Crops team demonstrated team-building and showed off an inflatable assault course. Hampshire Fire Services brought along three arson dogs and involved students in team building activities.
NHS team leader Sean Caddy and three volunteers shared their life stories with students and discussed solutions to drug and alcohol addictions.
The day provided inspiration as well as unique experiences, where pupils learned more about guns, drugs, fire safety, team building and communication skills.
Headteacher Neil Strowger said: “Bohunt takes its role at the heart of the community very seriously. It was superb to have so many of our local and national heroes in school so that our students could celebrate the work they do and learn about how they can get involved with their great work now and in the future.
“With our sixth form opening in September 2017, we’re really looking forward to being able to expand the community and careers work the school does.”
