ANGRY that one of their footpaths had been closed by a wealthy landowner, 30 people defied a closure notice and walk-ed Footpath 20, off Sickles Lane, on Tuesday.

Leader Bob Stammers, a former parish councillor, said after the walk: "We didn't expect any confrontation with the landowner, Rory McCarthy, who lives in the nearby Wheatley Oast, or any of his land managers.

"We weren't going to tear down fences or damage stiles but if anyone tried to block our way we would call the police."

As it was, the group, plus several dogs, had an "uneventful walk".
