NOW’S the time to start planning for Haslemere’s annual summer Arts and Crafts Weekend.

Tickets are now on sale for the popular event on July 7-8.

The weekend celebrates the town’s rich arts and crafts heritage. The weekend of special events, organised by Haslemere Museum and supported by Haslemere Events and the Visitor Information Centre, promises a fascinating insight into the Arts and Crafts Movement.

The Arts and Crafts Movement was one of the most influential international artistic movements of modern times and grew out of a concern for the effects of industrialisation on society and traditional skills in the late 1800s.

More than a 100 years ago, Haslemere was a thriving centre for a community of artists determined to revive lost country crafts in England. They set up craft workshops and weaving houses in the town and collected folk art objects from all over Europe.

The craft workshops and weaving houses have long since disappeared from Haslemere but the history of the inspiring movement is still visible today in the road names and buildings, together with a lasting legacy in the collection of European folk art that remains in Haslemere Museum today.

Highlights of the weekend include an evening talk with Antiques Roadshow expert Eric Knowles.
