WEY Hill has become a bay tree-lined boulevard, thanks to generous donations by local organisations and the planting skills of a team of volunteers.
Initial planting by Haslemere’s Wey Hill in Bloom (WIB) group began earlier in the summer for the ambitious landscape project to beautify a busy road with 60 planters containing 41 bay trees and 19 yew balls, interplanted with lavender, tulips and spring bulbs.
The final touches to the bay tree plantings were completed on Saturday (15/10) and the yew balls will take centre stage very shortly.
Grants from Shottermill Great War Memorial Trust, The Community Foundation for Surrey,
Haslemere Town Council and Waverley Borough Council section 106 funding, made the project possible.
As well as tending all the new planters, WIB will continue to look after the gardens around Haslewey and Locality Office, as well as planting spring bulbs on Lion Green.
WIB chairman Ken Griffiths said: “It looks spectacular and we have had a lot of positive feedback. We are just waiting for the 19 yew balls to go in the smaller pots.
“We have always wanted to plant trees because they are more structural. Bedding plants are only for summer and are high maintenance but trees and lavender will look good all the year round and require a lot less maintenance.
“The scheme was designed by Haslemere Mayor Sahran Abeysundara.
“We had more than a dozen volunteers respond to our planting appeal and they did a grand job. I’d like to thank everyone who took part and the organisations that have made it possible.”
