SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Louis Hunt found more than he bargained for when he went bug hunting at Witley Common - a World War Two hand grenade.
Luckily for Louis and his Bourne School classmates, who were on a school trip, the grenade was not live and was disposed of by a bomb disposal unit from Aldershot.
Mum Sarah said: "To begin with he thought it was a tortoise, so he nudged it with his foot. He then took it to his teacher and asked what it was."
The teacher realised it was a hand grenade and raised the alarm after the find at lunchtime on Tuesday.
Crispin Scott, National Trust property manager for Witley Common, said: "It was an empty hand grenade, and we think it was left over from when the common was a Second World War camp.
"We've done thorough sweeps of the land in the past. We went over it with a metal detector when the Witley Centre was built and were sure all the ammunition had been removed.
"We think a tree blew over and brought up the grenade."
The pupils' eventful day took another twist when their coach broke down, but they all got home safely.
