DETERMINED?Petersfield schoolgirl Imogen Belcher has completed the Great Newham London three-kilometre run, raising more than £350 for The Brain Tumour Charity following her own brain tumour diagnosis and the death of her great-grandfather from the disease.

Imogen, nine, was diagnosed with a brain tumour following a routine eye test in March 2014.

Since her diagnosis, Imogen has undergone several surgeries to remove fluid from her brain and is now on a “watch and wait” regime with six-monthly MRI scans.

The brave girl’s mum, Clare, said: “It was a very scary time for all of us but we are so proud of Imogen. She is a girl who loves being outdoors and enjoys running.

“She doesn’t let her brain tumour stop her from doing things and she went back to school four days after her operation, which is incredible.”

In October 2015, Imogen’s great-grandfather, Peter, was diagnosed with two brain tumours.

Clare said: “He fought hard to stay with us, but unfortunately passed away in December 2015 at the age of 79.

“Imogen wanted to help raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity to help people like her and her great-grandfather, so I suggested we do a fundraising event together.

“As great-grandad Peter was 79 when he passed away, Imogen wanted to try to raise at least £1 for each year he was with us.

“The actual run was great and we had a lovely day despite the heat.”

Imogen finished in a respectable time of 23 minutes 12 seconds.

Geraldine Pipping, The Brain Tumour Charity’s director of fundraising, said: “Imogen is truly remarkable and we are so grateful that she has chosen to raise awareness and funds for us.

“We receive no government funding and rely 100 per cent on voluntary donations, so it’s only through the efforts of Imogen and her mum Clare and others like them that we can work toward our twin goals of doubling survival and halving the harm caused by brain tumours.

“Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and people under 40 in the UK and survival rates have not improved significantly over the last 40 years. We need to change that.”
