FARNHAM Town Council's hopes for an imminent resolution of the Rowledge breakaway question have been dashed after Waverley Borough Council received conflicting legal opinions and halted its decision on the review.

Waverley's executive had been expected to issue a recommendation to the full borough council, meeting next Tuesday, that there be no further action on the petition which had called for the village's divorce from Farnham Town Council.

The referendum of Rowledge and Sandrock residents, conducted by Waverley in October, had seemingly resulted in the campaign being defeated, with a decisive two to one vote against formation of a new parish.

However, in a surprise move that has been attacked by a town council spokesman, Waverley has now sought a second legal opinion on the town council's actions in lobbying for a 'no' vote.
