TWO Farnham preservation groups have re-submitted a joint planning application for a restored Brightwell House to Waverley council.
Last month the Farnham Society and Farnham (Building Preservation) Trust applied for planning permission for meeting rooms and offices in the 1792 listed building.
But on the advice of Waverley planning officers, the two groups have returned with simplified plans.
Bill Tichener of the Farnham Society said: "At their suggestion, the application now simply shows Brightwell House without any extension or major internal alterations.
"It will be restored to its former dignity and converted to general community use, without involving the (Redgrave) theatre building at this stage.
"We consider that our scheme is simple and that it would have little impact on the fabric of the building itself; that it would restore and enhance the character of Brightwell House as a building of historic and architectural importance; and that it would secure its future for generations to come."
Mr Tichener said that the application is an exercise to demonstrate how simply the Grade II listed building could be restored - the Farnham Society and Farnham Building Preservation Trust cannot afford to fund the scheme.
The original planning application meant that Waverley's hopes to de-list Brightwell House were thwarted because buildings cannot be de-listed while a planning application relating to that building is pending.
Mr Tichener has denied claims that the Brightwell application was drawn up only to achieve this result.
"We believe that our proposals are constructive and, as they will considerably enhance its value, will make a worthwhile contribution to future discussions on the East Street regeneration scheme."
