REMEMBRANCE Sunday this year will be held on November 12, and will be marked by services across the Herald area. Two minutes' silence will be observed at 11 am on Remembrance Day, Saturday, November 11, at the war memorial in Haslemere High Street. On the same day at 10-45 am, the mayor of Haslemere, Brian Howard, has arranged for a short service of remembrance to be held which will be attended by Canon Peter Bruinvels, the Royal British Legion's county field officer for Surrey. All are welcome. House-to-house collections will start on Saturday, October 28, and continue until November 11. Poppies will be available from most local businesses in Haslemere during this time and from schools and churches in the town. Street collections will take place from November 4 to11. There will be poppy collectors outside Boots, Nobbs, and Somerfield, and also in West Street every day from 9 am until 5 pm. Collections at Haslemere railway station will start on October 30 and continue until November 11. Collectors will be at the station from 7 am to10-30 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm. Haslemere mayor Brian Howard has given the go-ahead for a garden of remembrance to be sited on the grassed area next to the war memorial, where small wooden remembrance crosses can be placed. Remembrance crosses and vehicle poppies can be obtained from next Saturday, October 28, at Marley Flowers in the High Street and Ultimate Vision in Petworth Road. Last year Haslemere and Grayswood collected a record £9,300 for the Poppy Appeal. This year the Royal British Legion is aiming, with everyone's help, to raise in excess of £10,000.
