MORE internet users have been getting behind the campaign to bring ADSL broadband services to local villages.

The number of people registering an interest in receiving the service has risen steadily throughout October with some villages almost halfway towards meeting BTÕs trigger levels.

As previously reported by the Herald only a handful of the villages which surround Bordon are able to receive broadband - a high-speed digital internet line capable of carrying data ten times the speed of a conventional modem - while the majority miss out.

This is because BT is not equipping all of its telephone exchanges with ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) technology, and will only do so if there is enough demand.

ÔTrigger levelsÕ have so far been set for three local exchanges serving Headley, Liphook and Grayshott, and if they are reached BT promises that it will provide the service.

For the Headley Down exchange, also used by internet users in Headley and Arford, the trigger figure is 350 and the number of people who have registered an interest has risen from 112 people at the beginning of October to 161 at the end of the month.

In Liphook and Bramshott, where the trigger figure is the same, 169 people have registered compared with 106 in early October.

Grayshott, which is connected to the telephone exchange at Hindhead, has a slightly larger task and needs to reach a trigger level of 400. However the number of people who have registered an interest has risen from 141 to 195.
