THE rain held off for the 70th annual Brook village fete on bank holiday Monday.

All the hard work by volunteers that had gone into the fete preparations paid off and visitors flocked from the surrounding areas to enjoy a fun day for all generations on the cricket green in front of Pirrie Hall.

The fete was opened by the local vicar, Jane Vlach, who was presented with flowers by 12 year old Theo, one of the fete’s youngest volunteers.

Organiser Jenny Foster said: “The crowds enjoyed a lovely family day out wandering around an array of brightly decorated stalls selling interesting goods from dog bandanas and hot tubs to Kashmiri shawls and beautiful glass jewellery.

“The village-run stalls, including the tombola, bric-a-brac and home-made cakes to mention a few, were extremely popular and the tea tent and barbecue sold out before the end of the day. The children’s races and tug of war were amusing and delightful to watch and everyone went home tired and happy.”

She thanked all those involved in the preparations for the day and particularly the fete’s sponsor, King Edward’s School, Witley, and all the local businesses and individuals who had donated prizes for the grand draw.

All proceeds go towards the maintenance of Pirrie Hall and Recreation Ground, which are run for the benefit of the community.
