CHIDDINGFOLD Brownies dug in to support Haslemere Rotary’s ‘Purple4Polio’ campaign, in which six million Ruby Giant crocus bulbs will be planted around the UK by Rotary Great Britain and Ireland together with the Royal Horticultural Society.
Eradicating polio has been Rotary’s main humanitarian focus for more than 30 years, and Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s Purple4Polio campaign is suggesting ideas and opportunities on how communities can get involved.
Ruby Giant was chosen, because its deep purple colour matches the dye painted on the fingers of children who have been immunised.
Former Haslemere club president Rob Terry said: “Chiddingfold Brownies and Guides, their leaders and members of the RHS and Haslemere Rotary planted 2,000 bulbs around the Honey Locust tree at the top end of the village green.
“Hopefully these will bring a purple splash to the areas in the spring. Grayshott, Grayswood and Liss are also joining in with planting 10,000 crocus bulbs.”
