Football legend George Best was trying to keep a low profile in Petersfield earlier this week despite hitting the headlines again. The former Manchester United star, 59, was pursued through the High Street by national press photographers on Monday. Sporting dark glasses that only partially covered the abrasions and bruises on his face, he was quickly whisked away by a taxi. According to national newspaper reports, Best had had a violent argument with his girlfriend, Ros Hollidge, after spending Saturday at the Epsom Derby. The former Northern Ireland footballer and 37- year-old Mrs Hollidge left the racecourse separately, but police were later called to her house in Surbiton. Best's clothes were reported to have been blood- soaked after the incident and he was taken to hospital by paramedics. Mrs Hollidge was arrested by the police and was released in the early hours of Sunday. George Best eventually returned to Forest Mere health farm in Liphook, where he lives, and he spent much of Monday in bars and a bookmaker's shop in Petersfield. He refused to comment on the weekend incident. Best's agent, Phil Hughes, also refused to comment on the events of the weekend. Best had a lifesaving liver transplant four years ago but has continued to drink alcohol. He has been dating Mrs Hollidge since last July.
