BUGS Netball Club scored a big fundraising hit on Saturday in aid of one of its teenage members, who was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare auto-inflammatory genetic disease.

The money raised at the netballathon in The Edge sports hall in Haslemere, which is shortly to become the BUGS’ new base, swelled the total raised by her family for Great Ormond Street Hospital to around £10,000.

Surrey University showed its support, playing in a fiercely-fought exhibition match against BUGS’ dads and brothers – most of whom had never played netball before – with the affected member’s brother Zac scoring the final goal.

As well as exhibition matches and family games, there was a cake sale and a raffle for a signed Surrey Storm netball dress.

Zac’s mother Vanessa said: “We have been totally overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity.”
