SUPPORT from businesses for the Christmas lights in Alton town centre looks set to top previous records, thanks in part to last-minute sponsorship of the town's Christmas trees. According to deputy town clerk, Greg Burt, each year Alton Town Council writes to businesses throughout the town asking for donations towards the £15,000 cost of the six-week long display and last year the final total topped £1,000. Mr Burt said: "This year the appeal got off to a flying start, with the total likely to be exceeded by the time the lights are turned off on twelfth night. " The fund has been given a welcome boost by Persimmon Homes - a new sponsor for the tree in the Market Square. The company is about to start work on a new housing development on land behind Chandos Lodge in London Road. Rob Allen, sales director for Persimmon Homes South Coast, said: "We are committed to supporting the communities in which we build and this donation is another example of the close relationships we have forged in this area. We hope that residents and visitors of Alton get much enjoyment out of the Christmas tree." Also this year, for the first time, the tree outside the Assembly Rooms has been sponsored by GWC Refurbishment Ltd which has enabled new lights to be provided. Atul Patel, who chairs ATC's recreation committee, said: "The tremendous level of support from local and national businesses this year really does show that the old adage about Christmas being a time for giving still holds true. The lights are enjoyed by everyone and it is great that so many companies want to support them. "This year we have concentrated on improving electricity supplies for the lights, so hopefully next year we will be able to improve the actual displays still further. The more support we receive, the better the lights will be."
