A HEADLEY Down resident's campaign to provide a permanent bus stop for students travelling to Alton College is gathering pace this week. Glen Bertram, of Furze Hill Road, Headley Down, called on bus operator Stagecoach and Hampshire County Council to install the bus stop at a dangerous corner in Headley Down before a student is killed. This week, Stagecoach told The Herald they were hoping to meet county council representatives in a matter of days to discuss the possible location of the bus stop. Mr Bertram decided to speak out after his daughter began taking the daily 238 bus to Alton College. She and several other students currently stand at an "unofficial stop" at the corner of Beech Hill and Fullers Vale. Mr Bertram said the students insisted on standing "at a very dangerous spot on the outside of the road for fear of the driver not seeing them". He would instead like the group to move to a safer spot on the other side of the road just before the bend. Mr Bertram said the proposed area would also provide a safe point where the bus could pull in. However, Mr Bertram said his plan will only work "if they (the students) know the driver will stop each morning for which a bus stop is required". He first brought this problem to the attention of Stagecoach in November last year but had seen "no evidence of any tangible progress being made". Edward Hodgson, commercial manager of Stagecoach, the bus company which runs the 238 service, this week told The Herald: "What we are looking to do is to visit the site with a representative of the police and the county council to establish a place along the road through Headley Down for a permanent bus stop."
