ALDERSHOT, Farnham & District Athletic Club sent a weaker squad to the latest Hampshire League cross-country meeting at Overton on Saturday.

But from the moment Sarah Burgin triumphed over Stubbington Green's Becky Gough in the Under-13 girls' event that opened proceedings at Overton on Saturday, it was business as usual.

Gough, winner of both races she had contested in the series, was two seconds down at the finish. Joanna Satchell was sixth, one ahead of Kalina Nowak as the pair secured AFD's first team victory of the afternoon.

The club's most emphatic display turned out to be by the U/17 men. James Ellis won from Martin Mashford, Andy Friend and Matt Leslie.

The U/15 girls had to settle for a one-two as Emma Pallant headed Stephanie Twell by six seconds.

Lucy Bowers of Southampton City claimed third from Hannah Jones who beat fifth-placed Charlotte Aberdeen for AFD's final scoring berth.

Stephen Blake made it four U/15 wins out of four in the league, enjoying an advantage of half-a-minute this time.

Greg Smith, third, and David Smith, fourth, were AFD's other scorers.

Phil Banks finally saw off the challenge of Rob Whittle (Basingstoke Mid-Hants) during the third of three laps in the senior men's contest.

Brian Stopher was third, David Udal fourth, Richard Batchelor eighth and Graham Russ 14th, one in front of Rob McCarthy who therefore did not score in AFD's victory.

Chris Bounds had his best run so far, failing by just three seconds to catch Southampton City's Scott Gallant who won the U/13 boys' race.

Chris Welch finished third and Josh Arnold fourth, while Tom Goddard found fifth was not enough to make AFD's scoring trio.

Although the senior ladies placed third on the day, they still top the table. Sarah Pickett led them home in sixth, one ahead of Charlotte Browning, the national U/15 champion, who was unable to count because she was competing out of her age-group. Leonie Smith, 12th, and Laura Tanner, 14th, did count.
