MEXICAN street food truck Hermanos Tacos are back in Farnham with a bang, after devoting nearly two months of their time helping to fuel NHS heroes on the front line.
During the coronavirus crisis, truck owners James Rolfe and Rupert Barter played their part in the Surrey Drive initiative, which was set up to serve hot food to front-line staff at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
The scheme was established in March after key workers struggled to buy food in between their long shifts and often saw empty supermarket shelves, with some people opting to stockpile supplies in anticipation of full lockdown in the UK.
Caterers, including Rolfe and Barter, helped to dish up more than 25,000 meals since their first delivery on March 31 after the initiative received a total of over £21,000 in donations.
Leading team members Hannah Sheppard, Steve Page, Iain Booth and Jonathan Bird used their Facebook page to thank all those who were involved after making their last delivery to NHS workers on May 22.
Rupert said: “It was a brilliant experience.
“I teamed up with Joe Keeley from Keeley’s Kitchens in Farnham to deliver around 850 meals a week to both the Royal Surrey Hospital and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.”
But after spending eight weeks cooking for the campaign, Hermanos Tacos are back in Farnham to sate the town’s tacos cravings once again.
From today, the truck will be parked outside the William Cobbett pub, serving a choice of four traditional tacos to take away, including braised brisket with pineapple and roasted squash with peanut salsa.
Customers can buy four tacos for £10 and grab a beverage from the Cobbett pub just a few steps away, which will also be opening to sell a selection of drinks from a pop-up bar.
In Hermanos’ mission to be Covid-secure, hand sanitiser will be provided and queue markers will also be put in place to ensure customers can follow social distancing rules, and only card payment will be accepted.
James and Rupert will be working between 4pm and 9pm Thursday to Saturday.
