BUTSER Ancient Farm is taking another step back – but for all the right reasons. The site at Chalton, popular for both leisure and educational activities, has been given approval by planners to build two authentic Anglo Saxon homes. It will allow primary school children to learn not only about the Celts and Romans but also the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Anglo Saxons to comply with new National Curriculum criteria. Situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park south of Petersfield, Butser is a respected resource for schools. Using archaeological evidence, bosses at Butser Ancient Farm will recreate buildings which were believed to have occupied the site around the sixth or seventh centuries. "We want to be able to show what housing was like 1,400 years ago and how the landscape has been used throughout the past, both as farmland and in the production of building materials," said a spokesman.
