MORE than 200 red roses were presented to Haslemere shoppers to celebrate both the Queen’s birthday and St George’s Day.

Passers by also enjoyed a colourful tour of the town by George, The Dragon and The Maiden, who were enacted in style by Woolmer Hill’s headboy, headgirl and senior prefect, George, Darcy and Cameron. Prior to their promenade, the trio dropped into four nursery schools to put on a mini-show.

Friday’s entertainment was laid on by the Haslemere branch of the Royal Society of St George with support from the town chamber of trade, and branch joint honorary president Shirley Hankers regaled nursery pupils with stories about England’s patron saint.

The St George’s Day window dressing competition, judged by Haslemere Mayor Sahran Abeysundara, town chamber of trade president David Goddin, and St George branch chairman, Martin Coakley, was won by the Hokey Cokey in Wey Hill.

Haslemere branch members also joined in the society’s national memorial parade at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, accompanied by members from the affiliated branch of Camelsdale Junior School led by headteacher Sarah Palmer.
