A BRAVE young schoolboy has been hailed a hero after saving his grandmother’s life.
After breakfast they decided to take Rocco, the family terrier, for a walk and set off to the nearby recreation ground, home of Frensham Cricket Club, just 100 yards away.
As they reached the lower end of the playing fields, Lesley started to feel woozy and sank to her knees and pitched forward. Always extremely fit and seemingly invincible, Lesley was having some form of fit and slipped shaking and choking into unconsciousness.
Despite being terrified and in tears at the sight of his stricken grandmother, quick-thinking George ran to the nearby tennis club to get help, yelling: “Please help, I think my granny is dying.”
The response from tennis coach Matt Marlow and one of the watching parents, Morgan Rees, was immediate, settling George down and racing over to help Lesley, who was lying face down on the grass. Both are first aiders and put Lesley in the recovery position even though she was still unconscious.
The fibrillation unit was rushed down from the village shop and David Lee, landlord of village pub The Holly Bush, summoned blankets from the pub. The paramedics and Ambulance Service were called and responded quickly.
Lesley gradually came round much to George’s relief. She was taken to A&E at Frimley Hospital and is now recovering at home after a suspected epileptic seizure.
Commenting on George’s bravery, Butts School headteacher Philippa Mitchell said: “We are very proud of George. He showed a sensible approach for a boy of his age. He kept his cool under extremely difficult circumstances and to respond as he did was amazing.”
The South East Ambulance Service are recommending George for an outstanding service award.
