CALLS have been made for a pedestrian crossing opposite Gostrey Meadow in Longbridge after a woman in her 60s was hit by a car on Monday evening last week.
The incident involving the female pedestrian and a silver Audi A4 happened at 5.10pm on the A287 between the junctions with Red Lion Lane and Downing Street, outside the Hawthorn Lodge retirement home.
First aiders rushed to the lady’s aid and covered her in a blanket at the side of the road, before an ambulance crew arrived.
A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said she was treated for injuries, including to her legs, before being taken to Frimley Park Hospital.
Surrey Police later confirmed her injuries were serious but not life-threatening, adding the A287 was closed for three hours while officers investigated what had happened.
Following the incident, many people took to Facebook to call for a safe crossing point on the “dangerous” stretch of road.
A typical comment on the Farnham Rants group page said: “Very dangerous trying to cross that road, need to consider getting a proper crossing there, a lot of school children cross it.”
Many agreed with this sentiment, with one person adding: “Couldn’t agree more - Farnham in general is awful for crossings - all on blind bends.”
Another member of the group said: “Honestly, the crossing points throughout Farnham seriously need to be looked at. They are all dangerous and there aren’t enough of them. They all seem to be incorrectly placed.”
It comes after Surrey County Council installed an ‘uncontrolled crossing’ just yards from the crash site this summer - narrowing a section of Longbridge on the north side of the bridge over the River Wey, complete with ‘tactile paving’ and a’ dropped kerb’.
However, no signage or lighting warns of the presence of the crossing point, and a county council spokesman admitted this week the crossing is not “immediately visible”.
The spokesman added: “Work to install a crossing and narrow the carriageway has been completed and, while we are looking to see if further road safety measurements are needed in this area, we need to take into account the huge budget pressures we are facing due to rising demand for our services, in particular adult social care.”
County councillor Pat Frost also put her weight behind those calling for a “proper” pedestrian crossing in Longbridge.
She told The Herald: “I was sorry to hear about the accident. However, I don’t think we should jump to any conclusion about what caused the accident as it is still under investigation.
“There is a ‘crossing point’ there but as Surrey’s highways department always does, they have been reassessing it.
“I am calling for a proper pedestrian crossing…but whether that would have made any difference to the accident or not I simply can’t say.”
Surrey Police are appealing for anyone who saw what happened prior to the incident or the incident itself to get in contact.
Anyone with any information should contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting incident reference P16266109 or use the online reporting system found at report.police.uk/ and enter the reference number in the ‘additional information’ section.
