AN appeal has been made for measures to be taken to prevent further traffic accidents at one of PetersfieldÕs worst blackspots.
At a meeting of Petersfield Town Council on Monday night, Paul Gooding from Home Way said something had to be done at the dangerous Durford Road crossroads.
Police are regularly called out to deal with accidents at the junction. The danger of the crossroads was highlighted last September when two incidents in the space of six days led to calls for action from residents.
At the meeting on Monday night Mr Gooding said: ÒThe junction I am here to talk about is the dangerous crossroads at Durford Road, which I am sure councillors are well aware of.Ó
Mr Gooding said councillors should consider cutting back the hedge at the Heath Road East side of the junction. He said the hedge created a visual block for motorists.
He said: ÒCutting back a section of the hedge would improve the sight lines for motorists. It would make it a lot safer.Ó
Town mayor Kenneth Hick said he would like to know the exact reason why so many accidents occured at the site.
Hampshire county councillor John West said he believed many of the incidents occurred because motorists had lost control of their vehicles and had driven straight across the junction.
Katie Pitt said she supported Mr GoodingÕs request, which she believed would cut the incident rate at the crossroads.
She said: ÒI drive across that junction frequently and if you are coming from Heath Road and look down Heath Road East there is a silly little hedge that sticks out. People have to pull right out into the road to be able to see.Ó
George Watkinson suggested that the town councilÕs contract manager should visit the site to find out what could be done in terms of trimming the hedge.
